Carved Sinxay Wooden Window Panels at Wat Haysoke, Vientiane, Laos

In the late 1980s, Venerable Bouakeo Sengsouriya, who was abbot of Wat Haysoke at the time and had been for twenty years, decided to have all the wooden doors and window covers in the front and on the right side of the sim carved with scenes from Sinxay. This project began in 1990 and lasted for three years. Bouakeo drew inspiration from examples of Buddhist art in Vientiane and other locations in Laos. Together, with a woodcarving expert, Mr. Sisouk, he helped draw the paper stencils used for carving the doors. Sisouk and his workers then carved the twenty four wooden panels and five doors during a period of three years.
